John A. Underwood was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He began writing at the age of six, and believes that after more than thirty-five years he is almost good at it.
He has been a college student, cook, contract laborer, receptionist, grocery store clerk, bookstore clerk, restaurant manager, bartender, and a homeless person at different times in his life.
John attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he studied Creative Writing. He has also lived on Florida’s Gulf Coast and in Washington, D.C.
John writes pulpy science fiction and space opera. He takes inspiration from a wide range of authors and media. The Voidstrider Saga is inspired variously by comic books, long-running anime series, and classic SF pulp like the Lensman series. His favorite authors include Alastair Reynolds, Lois McMaster Bujold, Iain M. Banks, Cherie Priest, and Neal Stephenson to name a few.
Outside of writing, his hobbies include amateur astrophotography, kayaking, seeing live music, and travel.
John currently lives in Knoxville.
