John A. Underwood was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He began writing at the age of six, and believes that after more than twenty-five years he is almost good at it.
He has been a college student, cook, contract laborer, receptionist, grocery store clerk, bookstore clerk, restaurant manager, bartender, and a homeless person at different times in his life.
John attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he studied Creative Writing. He has also lived on Florida’s Gulf Coast and in Washington, D.C.
John writes science fiction and space opera.
Under the name Johnson Underwood, he also writes absurd sci-fi/fantasy.
Authors who have influenced John include Frank Herbert, Philip K. Dick, Hunter S. Thompson, and Lois McMaster Bujold. His other favorites include Alastair Reynolds, Cherie Priest, C.J. Cherryh, David Weber, V.E. Schwab, and Catherynne Valente.
He has seen every Star Wars film in a theater and plans to keep it that way.
Currently, John lives in Knoxville, Tennessee.
